Promoting electricity saving through practical actions (Vietnamese)
Achieving many positive results
According to Tay Ninh Power Company, the unit, along with departments, sectors, and localities in the area, has promoted the dissemination and promotion of efficient and economical electricity use. As a result, in the 2020-2025 period, the electricity sector achieved the electricity-saving target (>2%) as per Government Directive No. 20/CT-TTg, dated June 8, 2023.
According to Deputy Director of Tay Ninh Power Company Do Anh Dung, to achieve this target, the company annually develops and implements a program to reduce electricity consumption; monitors electricity consumption at each substation, transformer, and power line according to voltage levels to evaluate and compare electricity consumption in each segment; and takes appropriate measures to effectively reduce electricity consumption; conducts day/night inspections of 110kV, 22kV, and low-voltage power lines and substations, cleans dust-covered insulators, and maintains high-density areas during the dry season.
Regularly check the temperature of connections to detect and promptly address poor contact, especially with overhead conductors. Thoroughly clear vegetation to prevent trees from encroaching on the power line corridor and to remove tall trees outside the corridor that could fall onto the power lines. Address poles with substandard grounding resistance and replace damaged grounding systems with new ones.
Furthermore, the power sector utilizes the PSS/A program (medium and low-voltage grid modeling program) to calculate technical power consumption, analyze and understand the causes, calculate optimal compensation allocation locations, and create voltage drop diagrams for each managed area to facilitate voltage calculation and adjustment. Monitoring and updating load demand in the area, developing monthly electricity supply plans, coordinating with local authorities and businesses to regulate load appropriately, and preparing response plans in case of adverse events. Tay Ninh Power Company also promotes propaganda and encourages customers to sign commitments to save electricity and reduce consumption during power shortages, as well as to adjust production schedules and use backup generators in such cases.
According to Mr. Duong Quoc Hung, representative of Jia Shin Co., Ltd., implementing electricity saving is mandatory due to the relatively high electricity costs, over 2 billion VND/month. With guidance from the power sector and solutions applied by the company, such as establishing a company-wide compressed air leak remediation program, installing a solar power system, replacing low-efficiency motors with high-efficiency ones, replacing office lighting with LEDs, etc., the company's electricity usage has significantly improved, resulting in a reduction of approximately 50–70 million VND in monthly electricity bills.
In addition, Tay Ninh Power Company has effectively implemented the electricity-saving program for the periods 2020-2025 and 2023-2025, in accordance with the Prime Minister's directives. The power sector conducts awareness campaigns on safe and economical electricity use through channels such as local radio stations and social media platforms like Zalo, Facebook, and YouTube. Simultaneously, it collaborates with Tay Ninh Newspaper, radio, television, and local Public Service Centers to produce reports, features, and contracted special pages to convey messages about safe and economical electricity use, diversifying communication methods to suit different customers and enhance the effectiveness of electricity saving.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Son (residing in An Binh neighborhood, An Tinh ward), his family received information and guidance on saving electricity from Trang Bang Power Company. They installed a solar power system, set the air conditioner to 27°C, and used LED lights. As a result, their electricity bill decreased by 100,000—200,000 VND per month. They also hope the community will join hands in saving electricity and conserving energy for a greener, safer, and better living environment.
Striving to save at least 2% on electricity
According to Deputy Director of Tay Ninh Power Company Do Anh Dung, in the 2020-2025 period, implementing Directive No. 20, the company proactively implemented energy-saving solutions as directed, contributing to raising awareness of efficient and economical electricity use among customers and within the company. Propaganda and guidance on safe and economical electricity use were implemented synchronously; technical solutions gradually proved effective, contributing to reducing electricity consumption and limiting peak-hour load.
However, implementation still faces some obstacles: determining the amount of electricity saved is difficult due to dependence on many factors such as load fluctuations, weather, customer electricity usage behavior, and actual operating conditions. Based on this, the 2026 plan and the 2026-2030 orientation set the overall goal of effectively implementing the National Program on energy saving and efficiency; contributing to ensuring energy security; reducing pressure on investment in power sources and grids; raising awareness and changing behavior towards efficient and economical electricity use throughout society; and contributing to achieving green growth goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and moving towards the Net Zero commitment by 2050.
Specifically, the electricity sector continues to strive to achieve a minimum 2.0% annual electricity saving target for commercial electricity consumption during the 2026-2030 period. All administrative agencies and public service units will implement electricity saving solutions, and all large industrial customers will receive consultation, assessment, and proposed energy saving solutions. Additionally, digital technology will be gradually applied in monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing electricity use.
To concretize the set electricity-saving goals and targets, according to Mr. Do Anh Dung, the electricity sector implements the electricity-saving plan from the beginning of the year, assigning specific responsibilities to each unit and strengthening coordination among local authorities and departments in promoting and inspecting the efficient and effective use of energy. Electricity companies will focus on large electricity consumers, industrial zones, and production facilities; integrate energy-saving content with grid operation management; and reduce power losses.
Key solutions include creating detailed plans, clearly defining responsibilities, regularly checking progress, connecting with competition and rewards, improving grid management, cutting down power losses, helping customers switch to better equipment, using electronic and remote meters, analyzing energy use data, and slowly introducing smart energy management. In addition, electricity companies will implement diverse communication methods, focusing particularly during the hot season, raising awareness among the community and large customers; launching a campaign to promote energy conservation; and promptly commending and rewarding outstanding collectives, individuals, and customers.
Specifically, for the 2026-2030 period, the electricity sector will build a culture of efficient and economical electricity use within the community; accelerate digital transformation in electricity management; closely integrate energy conservation with the development of renewable energy, especially rooftop solar power; improve inter-sectoral coordination mechanisms in implementing energy conservation programs; extensively implement demand management/restriction (DSM/DR) programs; and encourage customer-led energy management and smart electricity usage models.
“The Tay Ninh Electricity Sector has proposed several suggestions and recommendations to effectively implement the energy-saving program. These include a recommendation that the Southern Power Corporation should have a mechanism to promptly encourage and reward units and customers who perform well in energy saving and organize in-depth training on energy management and new technologies for staff working in this field.
Regarding mechanisms, policies, and resources, it is necessary to improve and supplement mechanisms to encourage the efficient and economical use of electricity, especially for manufacturing customers and industrial zones; allocate appropriate funding for propaganda, training, and technology application in energy saving; and integrate energy saving goals with green growth programs, energy transition, and emission reduction.” Mr. Do Anh Dung added./.
